01 — A LIFETIME OF SERVICE
INTRODUCTION
For Roy Alvey, St. Mary’s County is not simply where he lives. It is where he grew up, raised a family, built a career, and spent decades serving his community. Roy was raised on Snow Hill Farm and graduated from Chopticon High School. He and his wife, Rose, have made their home in Valley Lee and have remained deeply connected to the people and institutions of St. Mary’s County.

Roy grew up in St. Mary’s County and has watched the county change considerably over the course of his life. His background gave him an appreciation for both the rural communities that have long defined St. Mary’s and the technology and defense economy that has become central to the county’s future. That perspective shapes his belief that St. Mary’s can grow and prosper without losing the character, communities, and quality of life that make the county unique.
03 — MILITARY SERVICE
MILITARY SERVICE
After high school, Roy served in the United States Army with the 82nd Airborne Division. He was honorably discharged in 1971. His military service remains an important part of his background and his commitment to public service.
04 — TELECOMMUNICATIONS
38 YEARS IN TELECOMMUNICATIONS
Following his military service, Roy began a career with C&P Telephone in 1971. Over the next 38 years, he continued with the company as it became Bell Atlantic and later Verizon. His work brought him into direct contact with residents, businesses, and institutions throughout Southern Maryland. His career included work on telecommunications and high-speed data infrastructure serving locations including Naval Air Station Patuxent River and other major employers in the county. Roy also served as a member of Communications Workers of America Local 2107 and participated on its legislative committee. He retired from Verizon in 2009.
READY TO SERVE FULL TIME
Roy believes the office of Commissioner President requires time, accessibility, and consistent attention to the needs of residents. After decades in the private sector and years of civic involvement, he is prepared to make county service his full-time responsibility.
